About

I've loved art, crafts, and sewing since I can remember. One of my early grade school memories is of me in art class making a queen frog out of clay. Loved that frog. I took art electives throughout high school and in college, but being the first-born to immigrant parents, conservative of constitution, I graduated with a BS in business and got a "safe" job. My twelve years in the corporate world served me well and moved me from the East Coast to my current city in the West. I transitioned from the world of telecommunications and logistics to running my own creative business ten years ago. And, oh! I had my first son then too. My messy hair, paint-laden hands, and my heart are very happy.

My heart is also happy with my supportive and handsome husband and our two boys.

Watercolor

I'm relatively new to watercolor. I believed its permanence and unpredictably to be in direct conflict with my {recovering} perfectionist tendencies. But when I came face to face with watercolor in an art class, I slowly warmed up to it. Most of my work to date is small in scale. I've incorporated watercolor illustrations into paper products, printed fabric and sell art prints available as well.

The Stationery + Paper Goods Business

My business was born, essentially, while planning my wedding in 2003. As I wandered happily through the world of beautiful papers and fonts, I fell in love with it all. Shortly thereafter, I designed and created a birth announcement for my friend Mary. Another friend asked me to make hers, and voilà, I was in business! My clients have been happily purchasing truly personalized timeless and whimsical birth announcements, party invitations, note cards and wedding suites since.

Within my customizable card collection, clients may request changes in colors, fonts and design element placement/swapping. Pricing is as stated online. I also work with clients on design projects from wedding invitation suites to children's stationery.  Pricing is determined on a project-by-project basis.

I've have a small boxed card and paper goods collection I call Fig & Tulip. Letterpress cards are printed on gorgeous, thick 100% cotton paper. Flat print cards and envelopes use paper with at least some recycled content and some are also printed on 100% cotton. And for good measure, I've designed screen-printed tea towels, notepads, note cards, gift tags and rubber stamps. All Fig & Tulip products are designed by me and printed by humans in the San Francisco Bay Area in small batches.

About the Artist

Monica Loos works from her small, home-bases studio in San Francisco. Mostly self-taught, her style is equal parts classic, understated and whimsical. She is inspired by food, flora, landscapes and human faces. She approaches her work in a methodical manner as her left and right hemispheres fight for position. Monica works primarily in watercolor and acrylics.

Though her first high school love was the art of photography, born the first child of conservative, immigrant parents, Monica graduated from college in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in business. She worked in the corporate world for twelve years, which eventually landed her in California. Never having lost touch with her creativity, Monica started her own creative business as a graphic designer the same year her first son was born, 2005. Wanting to feel closer and more personally connected to the artwork she was creating, she began working in watercolor. Her current artist idol is San Francisco’s own Richard Diebenkorn. His figures, landscapes and sketchbook work are an endless source of inspiration and joy.

Monica’s work has earned her a finalist position in Martha Stewart’s American Made contest, a mention by Megan Markle in People magazine, as well as mentions on PopSugar and StyleMePretty.

Monica lives in San Francisco with her husband and two boys. You may run into them walking along the Land’s End trail, enjoying a pastry at a local bakery, or on the tennis court.
